0 Kite SurfingCalifornia travel expert Veronica Hill of http://www.CaliforniaTravelExpert.com offers a guide to kite surfing California in this episode of “California Travel Tips.”

With plenty of wind, waves and sunny weather, California makes a great kite surfing destination.

This rapidly growing sport, also called kite boarding, is huge throughout the state, especially along the Central Coast and San Francisco.

When kite surfing San Diego beaches, there’s probably no better place than Silver Strand State Beach in Coronado, just an 8-mile drive from the tropical winds of Baja, Mexico.

In Southern California, the kite surfing season runs from June to September. And all you need is an open body of water and a steady sideshore or onshore wind of approximately 12-24 mph to take flight.

Belmont Shores in Long Beach is the most popular destination in L.A., with winds perfect for beginning surfers. More advanced kite surfing is found at Sunset Beach, Seal Beach and Leo Carillo State Beach, near Malibu.

When you’re ready to learn how to kite surf, head to Enchanted Cove in Mission Bay, San Diego.

Two of the most popular companies for kite board lessons are Manta Wind & Water Sports and West Coast kiteboarding.

It takes about 4-6 hours to learn the basics. And though there is a very steep learning curve, once you get it, you’ll be hooked.

I’m Veronica Hill and that’s you’re California Travel Tip.

How expensive is kiteboarding as a sport/hobby?

Posted on 30th June 2011 by admin in kiteboarding

I’ve recently scheduled kiteboarding lessons in an attempt to find a new sport/hobby! As an avid snowboarder and skimboarder, I’m really looking forward to it. But, I’m curious as to how much money this sport may require if someone is to get seriously involved. Kite, board, harness system, handles, maintenance, repairs, etc. Your knowledge will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I’m trying to do the same thing..By far one of the sickest sports out there!
I’ve been doing my research and know someone who’s just gotten into the past 2 years or so (who’s a near pro wakeboarder, so it’s a little easier for him) but..What my friend had done was buy a kite first. I think he bought in on eBay for around $650. He practiced flying the kite for an entire summer before even stepping for in the water. After he got that down he paid for a lesson for around $300, his spent a minimal amount on the land because he has taught himself already. After that he took a few more lessons for around $100 to get better skills before he was comfortable to go out on his own. He recommended that I get lessons first so that I could learn to fly the kite (around $500 for first timers) then take more in order to get the basics of getting up, staying up and how to fall right and what not. After that the prices will drop substantially for lessons (I think under $100).
I’ve seen kites priced from $600-$1,300. Different kites are used for different wind conditions. Once into kite boarding most people will have multiple kites for different conditions. I’ve been looking into snow kiting too! You might want to check that out, water kites can be used in snow but snow kites generally are not good for water. As far as repairs, be sure to check the warranty on the kite you buy, check out the customer reviews on them too. I know that I’ve read some kites have a problem of not being sealed well. I think boards are generally around $300-$500. I don’t know much about cables and stuff though…sorry
Good luck with the lessons!

Best 2.5m Kiteboarding Trainer Kite Package

Posted on 30th June 2011 by admin in kiteboarding

41VCt1CYfwL. SL160 Best 2.5m Kiteboarding Trainer Kite Package
Product DescriptionWhether you are coming to kitesurfing, from wakeboarding, windsurfing, surfing, snowboarding or any of the other extreme sports the first thing you are going to need to know is how to handle a kite- You have to learn to walk before you can fly.

We offer two soft-foil trainer kites sized 1.5m and 2.5m. Either size is perfect for learning your basic kite control and feeling how the kite responds to steering input. Both soft kites are easy to handle, pack down small and are robust enough to survive the misuse that trainer kites are bound to experience. The 1.5m trainer is a simple 2 line foil kite that comes with a wrist safety least suited to the limited amount of power that a kite of this size generates. The larger 2.5m kite develops much more pull, giving you experience closer to that of flying a real inflatable kitesurfing kite and comes with a rear line safety line that will enable you to safely land your trainer in higher winds.

If you have previous experience of flying a kite we recommend that you go straight for the 2.5m trainer. If this is your first kite or you are going to be flying the kite with young children then we recommend the 1.5m as your first choice.

Both kites come soft packed with their own carry bag and instructional DVD to help you start to master your kite control skills before moving onto your first lesson from a professional instructor.
